How to read a guitar chord diagram

  • Vertical lines are the strings: E A D G B E, from the lowest-sounding string to the highest.
  • Horizontal lines are the frets. The thick line at the top is the nut.
  • Dots show where to press. The number is the finger: 1 index, 2 middle, 3 ring, 4 little finger.
  • A bar across several strings is a barre: one finger presses them all.
  • ○ above a string means play it open, × means don't play it.
  • A label like “5fr” next to the diagram means it starts at that fret.
