About ChordRoot

ChordRoot is for anyone who wants to play a chord now: a beginner stuck on F, a ukulele player who wants a song in an easier key, a pianist looking for an inversion.
What is on the site
- 120 chords on each of 6 instruments: guitar, ukulele, piano, mandolin, banjo, bass.
- Scales in every key, with positions on guitar, bass and ukulele and fingering on piano.
- All 24 major and minor keys with their chords and progressions.
- 17 tunings with a chord chart for each.
- Traditional songs and hymns with chords for every instrument, in any key.
How the pages work
- Easiest shape first. Shapes are ordered by how hard they are to play: no barre before barre, fewer fingers, a smaller stretch and frets near the nut come first. When a chord usually needs a barre, the page also shows a way to play it without one.
- The root is always marked in diagrams, so you can see where the chord's name comes from.
- One spelling per chord. Chords use the common name (C#, Eb, F#, Ab, Bb) and list the other name as an alias. Keys and scales keep their real spelling, because the written notes differ: F# major has an E#, Gb major has a Cb.
- Songs are public domain only. Words, melody and harmony are all in the public domain, and each song page credits the writers and the source of the setting. Nothing is copied from other chord sites or from recordings.
- You can hear everything: every shape, scale and progression has a play button.
